The Golden Star

The Kosmos

“Being scattered in Space, without order or system, the World-Germs come into frequent collision until their final aggregation, after which they become comets. Then the battles and struggles begin. The older bodies attract the younger, while others repel them. Many perish, devoured by their stronger companions. Those that escape become Worlds. These are the ‘battles of the Flames,’ the ‘wars in heaven,’ the ‘wars of the Titans,’ and the struggles between Osiris and Typhon, of which you can read in the various mythologies.

“Fohat, the constructive Force of Kosmic Electricity, is said, metaphorically, to have sprung from the Brain of the Father and the Bosom of the Mother, and then to have metamorphosed himself into a male and a female; in other words polarized himself into positive and negative electricity.

“As the Father–Mother is identical with the Primordial Æther, or Astral Light, so is Kosmic Electricity cosmically Fohat—the Son—homogene with the Astral Light before the Sun was evolved from it. Fohat hardens and scatters the Seven Brothers; which means that Electricity forces into life and separates primordial substances, or pregenetic matter, into atoms, which are the source of all life and consciousness.

“It is through Fohat that the ideas of the Universal Mind are impressed upon Matter, and it is electricity plus intelligence. You should know that Fohat is seen in the aurora borealis and australis, both of which manifest at the very centres of terrestrial and magnetic forces. The two poles are the storehouses, the receptacles and liberators of cosmic and terrestrial Vitality, which is Electricity, from the surplus of which the Earth, had it not been for these two natural safety-valves, would have been rent to pieces long ago. The phenomena of the Polar lights is accompanied by, and productive of strong sounds, like whistling, hissing and cracking.

“Thrilling through the bosom of inert Substance, Fohat impels it to activity and guides its primary differentiations over all the seven Planes of Cosmic Consciousness; the seven Protyles, or seven Prakritis of aryan antiquity; or Natures serving severally as the relatively homogeneous bases; which in the course of the increasing heterogeneity, in the evolution of the Universe, differentiate into the marvellous complexity presented by the phenomena on the planes of perception.

“Fohat is the Fiery Whirlwind, the Messenger of the Will of the Primordial Seven Sons of God.

“Fohat is also the bridge by which the Ideas existing in the Divine Thought are impressed on Kosmic Substance as the Laws of Nature. It is the dynamic Energy of Kosmic Ideation, and also the intelligent medium, the Thought Divine, transmitted and made manifest through the Dhyân Chohans, the Architects of the visible World. It is also the mysterious link between Mind and Matter, the animating principle, electrifying every atom into life. In the unmanifested Universe Fohat has nought to do with Kosmos yet, for the latter is not born and still sleeps in the bosom of the Father–Mother. He is but an abstract philosophical conception or idea, for the time has not arrived when he produces anything by himself. He is simply a potential creative Power. When the time of awakening arrives, Fohat is said to produce seven Laya Centres. This means that for formative or creative purposes the Great Law stays, or modifies, its perpetual motion on seven invisible points within the era of the manifested Universe. Laya is the Zero-point or -line, the realm of absolute negativeness, or the one real, absolute Force, the neutral axis; not one of many aspects, but its centre. A neutral centre; the dream of those who would discover perpetual motion.

“Invisible intra-cosmic motion is eternal and ceaseless; cosmic motion, subject to perception, is finite and periodical. Only the intracosmic Soul, the ideal Kosmos in the immutable Divine Thought, never had a beginning; nor will it have an end.

“Fohat being everywhere, it is also in the Astral World, where it is used by the Minds which dwell there between incarnations in order to vivify their Astral Bodies during their time of existence there, just as human bodies are vivified by it in the shape of the Fiery Spark. Fohat there acts as a sort of protective and life-giving cloak, or aura, to the Astral Body as well.

“Fohat is closely related to the One Life, or the Supreme Deity. The Powers of Fohat are placed in the Circles of the Equator, the ecliptic, and the two parallels of declination, or the tropics, to preside over the climate.

“In the ancient Scriptures you can read that Fohat and His Sons were Radiant as the noontide Sun and the Moon combined; and that the Four Sons on the middle Fourfold Circle, ‘Saw their Father’s Songs, and heard his solar-selenic Radiance.’

“This means that the agitation of the Fohatic Forces at the North and South Poles of the Earth, which result in a multicoloured radiance at night, has in it several of the properties of Æther, Colour and Sound. Sound is the characteristic of Æther; it generates Air, the property of which is Touch; which by friction becomes productive of light and colour.

“Fohat, then, is the personified electric power, the transcendental binding unity of all cosmic energies, on the unseen as on the manifested planes; the action of which resembles—on an inverse scale—that of a living Force created by Will, in those phenomena where the seemingly subjective acts on the seemingly objective, and propels it to action.

“Fohat is not only the living Symbol and Container of the Force, but is looked upon by the Occultists as an Entity; the forces it acts upon being Kosmic, human and terrestrial, and exercising their influence on all those planes respectively. On the earthly plane its influence is felt in the magnetic and active force generated by the strong desire of the magnetizer.

“On the Kosmic Plane, it is present in the constructive power that in the formation of things—from the planetary System down to the glow-worm and the lovely daisy—carries out the plan in the Mind of Nature, or in the Divine Thought, with regard to the development and growth of a particular thing or Being. It is, metaphysically, the objectivized Thought of the Gods, the ‘Word made flesh’ on a lower scale, and the Messenger of Kosmic and human Ideation; the active Force in Universal Life.

“In its secondary aspect, Fohat is the Solar Energy, the electric vital fluid, and the preserving Fourth Principle, the Animal Soul of Nature as it were, or—Electricity. We will go further than this and assert that Electricity is not only Substance, but that it is an emanation from an Entity which is neither God nor Devil, but one of the numberless Entities that rule and guide our World, according to the Eternal Laws.

“Science has also come to the conclusion that electricity is a tangible thing, with some of the properties of ordinary matter, and among them the ability to move; and in this manner it is also catching up with the ancient Occult Teachings.

“It knows that electricity may exist as separate electrons, protons, or positrons, or in collected charges of these entities, and that electric currents, for instance, present a variety of aspects.

“It knows of progressive motions of electrons in a conductor, which is called ‘electric conduction,’ and of the two-way traffic of charged ions, called ‘electrolytic conduction’. The current may consist of a flight of electrons or other charged particles through a vacuum, or it may be a bodily movement of an electric charge, like that on one of the carriers of a static machine. It talks of displacement currents which are assumed to take place in a dielectric, or even in a vacuum, which accounts perhaps for the behaviour of electromagnetic fields and radiation; but science has as yet no definite conception of the true nature of electricity, or Fohat in our terms.

“It is as great a mystery as that of gravitation, but in this instance there is no such thing as gravitation. Instead of it there is attraction and repulsion in the Kosmos, and this produces balance.

“The Sun is a huge magnet, and it has a tremendous magnetic field around it, in the same manner as all other heavenly bodies in our Kosmos have such magnetic fields, or the atom and all living and inanimate beings and things possess them.

“You will remember that I mentioned the attraction exercised when two electrons in an atom have an anti-parallel spin, when there is a tendency within these electrons to join. This applies also to the heavenly balls of incandescent matter, thrown off from the first central Sun during the beginning of the creation of the Kosmos. Some balls, in parallel spin, rapidly develop a magnetic field which protects them from any future collisions with other balls when shot off into Space at a tangent, and this repulses the rest and keeps them at their proper distance in Kosmic Space. These balls leave the Kosmos and become ‘Comets.’ The magnetic fields will seemingly bend light-rays, but actually nothing of the sort happens. This seeming disturbance of the straight path of a light-ray has led to many wrong conceptions and calculations on the part of some modern scientists, and it will be found later that the ancient teachings in regard to the nature of such and other phenomena are absolutely correct and that so-called ‘modern’ science is wrong.
